400,000 acres

From a small stake in a Wyoming truckstop, Robert Earl Holding, who passed away in 2013, assembled an empire that ranged from oil refineries and gas stations to ski resorts in Idaho (Sun Valley) and Utah (Snowbasin). The Salt Lake Tribune estimated his total investment in the success of the 2002 Winter Olympics at $300 million, including the construction of The Grand America Hotel and a complete overhaul of Snowbasin Resort. Holding amassed the largest private portfolio of real estate in Salt Lake City. In addition, he owned ranches in northern Wyoming and southern Montana. According to The Tribune, one of his employees once gave him a plaque that echoed his credo: “All I want is the land next to mine.”
