615,000 acres

In the decade following the Civil War, Dr. Howell Lykes shuttered his medical practice to oversee the family farm in Florida’s Hernando County. In 1900, Lykes and his seven sons incorporated Lykes Bros. Inc. A century later, the family’s holdings have grown from 500 acres to encompass largescale cattle, sugarcane, and citrus operations in Texas and in Florida, where the 337,000-acre Lykes Ranch in Glades and Highland Counties ranks as one of the largest contiguous tracts in Florida.
