615,000 acres

In the decade following the Civil War, Dr. Howell Lykes shuttered his medical practice to oversee the family farm in Florida’s Hernando County. In 1900, he and his seven sons incorporated Lykes Bros. Inc. Fast forward more than a century, and the clan’s holdings have grown from 500 acres to encompass large-scale cattle, sugarcane, and citrus operations in Texas and in Florida, where the 337,000-acre Lykes Ranch in Glades and Highland Counties represents one of the largest contiguous pieces of land in the Sunshine State.
