No. 11 Wilks Brothers

672,000 acres (up 172,000 acres)

Brothers Farris and Dan began their careers as bricklayers; they made their fortune in fracking. In 2011, the two sold their 70 percent stake in Frac Tech Holdings for $3.5 billion to a foreign consortium that included Singapore’s Temasek Holdings and South Korea’s sovereign wealth fund, Korea Investment Corp. The Wilks proceeded to invest a portion of that windfall in land. Big land. In addition to significant holdings in their native Texas, the Wilks have established themselves as the largest private landowners in the Treasure State, snapping up prime properties such as Montana’s 62,000-acre N Bar Ranch from former Land Report 100er Tom Siebel. In 2016, they acquired 172,000 acres of Idaho timberlands from Potlatch Corporation.
