Who: Founded in 1945 by George Kurtz, today the third generation of auctioneers conduct more than 200 auctions. President Bill Kurtz, CAI, is the former president of the Hall of Fame of the National Auctioneers Association as well as a member. The firm offers brokerage services in addition to auctions.
Where: Headquarters are in Owensboro, Kentucky, with additional offices in Henderson, Kentucky; Evansville, Indiana; and Panama City Beach, Florida.
Why: “In 2011, our ratio was 90% auction and 10% brokerage,” says John Kurtz, CAI.
Wow: Of the 207 auctions the firm conducted in 2011, the sale of the 1,486-acre Diamond Island (pictured above) was a standout in terms of both sales price of $6.2 million and its storied history as a former pioneer outpost, plantation, and pirate hideout.
