No. 32 Lyda Family
260,000 acres
The Fort Stockton Division in the wilds of West Texas forms the bulk of the Lyda family’s holdings. After selling New Mexico’s Ladder Ranch to Ted Turner, family patriarch Gerald Lyda acquired the sprawling cattle operation, which extends across Pecos and Brewster counties. Christened La Escalera Ranch, the ranch runs Black Angus cattle and boasts abundant wildlife, including desert mule deer, pronghorn, elk, Barbary sheep, coyotes, bobcats, Rio Grande turkey, and blue quail. Today, La Escalera is owned and operated by siblings Gerald D. Lyda, Gene Lyda, and Jo Lyda Granberg.
